Mette Holm guests J-Popcon 2023

Nov. 21, 2022

We are proud to present yet another guest to the programme: Mette Holm! Mette Holm is one of – if not the most famous translator of Japanese literature in Denmark, and among others she is known for her translations of the works of Haruki Murakami. And we are so lucky that she will tell us about translating his works and what followed, on Saturday during J-Popcon, the 18th February.

Behind all foreign literature read in Danish, there is a translator, but it is often not something we speak about. But when an author has such a cult status like Haruki Murakami, who only rarely speaks in front of his readers, the spotlight falls onto the translator.

For many years, Mette Holm has made Haruki Murakami accessible here in Denmark. And now, she will do it at J-Popcon too. Who is this Murakami? The lastest short story collection in Danish, 'Første person ental', and the essay 'At skille sig af med en kat' will be the starting point of this talk about both man, work, and not least the translation of the work.

But Mette Holm goes further than that, for what has Murakami's popularity actually meant for Japanese literature in Denmark? Which authors have followed in the wake of him? And how is it to translate them? What does she do to ensure that they don't end up sounding like Murakami?

We are really looking forward to hearing her talk – and we hope that you are just as excited as we are!
