The two cosplay shows of J-Popcon

Nov. 24, 2012

There has been some comments on the news that J-Popcon from 2013 will feature two cosplay shows instead of just one. We want to take this opportunity to elaborate on our decisions and dispell some rumours that flourished in the wake of the exciting news.

First a little bit of history. In 2007 World Cosplay Summit came to Denmark and J-Popcon played host to the Danish qualification. Back then the cosplay scene was of such a size that the qualification could be included in our annual cosplay show. Since then the number of cosplayer more than tripled, J-Popcon has grown considerably and has become a qualifying event for European Cosplay Gathering and EuroCosplay as well. With the increased number of cosplayers and additional qualifications for the three largest international cosplay events, it is our belief that the time has come to split the J-Popcon cosplay show in two. Doing so will let us cater to both new and experienced cosplayers, with different desires, and give everyone a fair chance to compete. We hope the split will result in two balanced shows, celebrating two different types of cosplay.

The cosplay show will return to its roots and once more become a place for experiments, fancy ideas as well as lots and lots of fun. With less pressure on each participant, the show will be well-suited for those who want a down-to-earth competition without the stress of the qualifiers. The show will focus on entertainment and opportunities to play with new ideas and concepts. This will be mirrored in the categories of the competition. They could be in the vein of best use of scene ninjas (see http://youtu.be/RYa1f2yKclI and http://youtu.be/tw3L2y7GbjY) or most interesting crossover.

The qualifying rounds will come together in the new event, Dansk Cosplay Mesterskab (Danish Cosplay Championships - DCM) which will be the closest thing to an official Danish championship in cosplay there is. This is where the Danish repesentatives for international cosplay events are found and DCM will therefore be the show of choice for cosplayers who want to challenge themselves with impressive, extremely well-crafted costumes and stunning performance. We encourage everyone who feels up to the challenge to participate. The worst that could happen is a good experience and no prize.

For those who were concerned that it would only be possible to participate in one competition, we have good news. If you want, you are more than welcome to participate in both competitions, but with different acts.

The final details of the two shows will be released later on.
